review 1: This thin book has Borgian twists of logic that makes it engaging to read. Mathea is an engaging character almost throughout. When I didn't find her engaging, she was tedious, with character flaws I had no patience for. But that's me. She's crazy and I get that, I sympathize, even empathize, with that, but, wait, not that, that's too crazy. Fortunately, for the most part, i found her, and the writing inventive and witty with a way of putting not 2 and 2 together, but 2 and A ( or sometimes Q) together to express a reality I hadn't known before. The translation is very good, I think, though I can't compare it to the original.I get the feeling there is much in the book, in the nuances of the writing and the culture that I missed by not being Norwegian.
review 2: I
... more'm not sure what I was expecting this book to be like - but it wasn't what I got. I couldn't quite decide if the narrative voice was unreliable, quirky or both, nor could I quite decide whether I liked it or not. However, all was redeemed by the line: "But sometimes you have to give meaning to meaningless things. That's usually how it is." which about sums it all up. It's well written (by which I suppose I mean well translated), has a distinctive, if slightly odd, narrator and I liked the adoption of an aged (seemingly slightly mad) point of view. Having said that though, I don't think that I was entirely brought under its spell. less
