review 1: For anyone who still wants to tumble into a wardrobe and arrive in a snowy wood, but has felt betrayal over Lewis's more problematic tendencies. This is a wonderfully crafted work of criticism that examines not only the Chronicles of Narnia, but Lewis's life and colleagues who informed this work, particularly Tolkien. It was a fascinating read, and as an aside, very exciting that Laura Miller is pals with Susanna Clarke and interviewed her for this book.
review 2: A great overview not just of Narnia, but literary criticism, as well. The subtitle ("A Skeptic's Adventures in Narnia") is somewhat misleading - Miller spends less time than one might expect given the title discussing the Christian imagery in the books, and more time comparing and contrasting many lit
... moreerary styles, as well as providing historical and personal context for the books. She does a wonderful job of comparing/contrasting Lewis with J.R.R. Tolkien, in particular. A good read for anyone who grew up with the Narnia books, for whom these books were a formative experience, and who, after returning to them as an adult, found themselves troubled by some of the elements they were too young to notice the first time around. less

An excellent read for anyone interested in Lewis, Tolkein, or young adult fantasy.

Eh, it was less fun than I expected it to be. Seemed a little disjointed.
