review 2: A thoughtful reflection on the structure and making of the Narnia Chronicles. Could also have been titled, “Escape from Narnia.” Miller compares myth and symbol to fantasy and allegory, and compares the beliefs and approaches of J.R.R. Tolkien and C.S. Lewis. They were both outsiders who fought for the inner circle, the “tradition” of England, of God and Country, more than those whose membership in the inner circle was undoubted. Tolkien thought Narnia a slapdash, balderdash, hodgepodge, rush job. Miller, on the loss of unitary, concrete meanings that accompanies the development of greater specialization of language and culture: “Now I am my own woman, but I used to be a goddess.” less
