review 1: I not only love to eat, I love to cook and I love to travel. Put all this together and "Four Kitchens" was a perfect match. I totally enjoyed learning about how different kitchens operate - the hierarchy, the sexism, the monotony, and the passion. I did find myself wishing Shockey had more purpose to her travels. It was as if this was only about writing a book. There was minimal self-discovery or actualization. The reader doesn't see much of a progression of the author herself as a cook much less a person.
review 2: I made it through this book but didn't truly enjoy it. The author takes on a tone of experience that it doesn't appear she has earned. I agree with a previous review that the attempts to weave in love interests and friendships were unsuccessfu
... morel. They could have added another dimension, but instead they seemed forced and abbreviated. I read a lot of culinary memoirs and this one wasn't one of my favorites. less
