review 1: Writing a successful travel memoir is exceedingly difficult. It is very easy for a writer to bore the pants off their readers with too much personal detail, or to overwhelm them with too much cultural or historical detail for the country/place they're visiting. The writer needs a balance between their personal experiences and observations of a new place and some background information about that place. They also need to discuss the differences between their own background and something about where they're visiting - and to keep it interesting, everything needs to be thrown into sharp relief, so to speak. And then it is very easy to come off as supercilious and self-impressed when comparing their own country to their host country.Ms Adams has managed to detail her various e... morexperiences of culture shock during her visit to China without sounding condescending or ridiculing her host country. Her ability to walk this fine line - to tell us the things that we really want to know - the good, the bad and the ugly - while still allowing her host country to retain its dignity, is a rare talent. This is a warm, genuine, personable piece of writing which enlightens, educates and entertains. The chapter headed 'Dianne' alternately moved me very much and scared the pants off me.This is a very enjoyable read - so much so that I went to bed early a few nights just so that I could read it!
review 2: This book is full of real and raw personal experiences of an American girl teaching English in China. As I read the book, I found that I could identify with almost every experience that Leanna described - or at least know someone else who could. If you know someone who is living in China, this book will help you get a glimpse at what their life might be like. If you are thinking about moving to China, this book might help you know what to expect. less
