review 1: I was looking forward to reading this book about a mother whose only daughter wsa going off to college. I hoped to get ahead of my emotional response to my own only daughter going off to college by reading about someone else. But the book did not meet my expectations in this way. The author rarely mentions her daughter at all, but instead talks about her own journey back to herself. I certainly thought that would be helpful as well, but it wasn't. Large portions of the book are references to the literary and historic. Far too many and not as clearly connected to the narrative to make reading interesting. This is quite a disappointment.
review 2: Reading this book was a little like spending a weekend in Vermont with an old friend. I liked Lynn (it's a me
... moremoir), and I liked how courageous and raw and honest she was. I have spent a little time here and there in Woodstock, VT, and I could imagine where she was, even though I could NOT imagine signing up for such a strenuous adventure. She touches on a lot of different aspects of being a woman of a certain age: surviving breast cancer, moving her mother out of the family home, online dating, losing a beloved husband when he dies, sending her only daughter off to college. Ultimately, she is finding her way now that she is no longer defined by various roles in life (daughter, wife, mother). less
