review 1: Loved this book. As a Christian, I have many questions about the Mormon church, especially after talking with some of the Mormon missionaries who come through every year. This book gave me great insight into the lives and religion of Mormons, as well as where their doctrine differs from Christianity. The author gave a vivid picture of the struggles that she and her family went through when getting out of Mormonism. I would highly recommend this book to anyone who has questions or is exploring either religion.
review 2: The story of how former BYU professor Lynn Wilder and her family came to understand the truth about Mormonism and subsequently leave the LDS church could have been my story. The similarities in how God brought them to an understanding of the fals
... moreehoods contained in the church that they had been devoted members of for 30 years are both astonishing and yet unsurprising. Wilder describes her discomfort with the rituals of the temple endowment ceremony, baptism for the dead, racism against African Americans, polygamy, and doctrine uncovered that is still taught by the church today but is not covered in missionary discussions. Wilder also describes her willingness to rationalize and overlook these glaring warning signs as mere anomalies in a religion that emphasizes family, service, and rallying to take care of their own. It is not until their youngest son, Micah, is sent home early from his mission for declaring the sufficiency of Christ and refusing to declare the truth of the Book of Mormon and uphold the prophet that the tide begins to turn. Through Micah's exhortation to his family to read the New Testament, Wilder and the rest of the family begin to see and understand, through the grace and wisdom of the Holy Spirit, the discrepancies, half-truths, and outright lies of the Mormon faith. I frequently found myself nodding in agreement as Wilder details her awakening and cheering by the end for the deliverance of her family. If you want to truly understand Mormonism from the perspective of someone who lived fully immersed in it, Unveiling Grace offers a fair, balanced, and truthful analysis. Would have rated 5 stars but the narrative got bogged down and tedious at times and the book probably could have benefited from better editing. less
