review 1: This was a very enjoyable read because of the gorgeous colors and overall production values. I love the look of her script handwriting on the page. My husband and I read it together, side by side. Kalman is a quirky optimist, and marries words with her painted images perfectly. Here she explores the meaning of America in broad strokes and charming details. I will keep this on my shelf and reread it more than once, I'm sure.
review 2: So many things to love about this book. Like the first book I read by her, "The Principles of Uncertainty", Kalman makes art and poetry out of small, quirky observations strung together in tangental and subtle ways that, in the end, sneak up on the reader to pack a wallop of insight about big LIFE ideas. What makes this book more e
... morenjoyable than "Principles" is the research and history woven into her original style. Structured by month, the book is taken from Kalman's 2009 NY Times blog on US history. Because she maintains her unique approach to that history, it is entirely fresh and inspiring. This book reminds me of Redniss' "Radioactive" in that the author approaches a familiar story/event/person in a way that feels contemporary and in doing so, gives us a lesson on love (Curie) or, in this case, on the American pursuit of happiness. less

Love the illustrations (as always), but the text itself was a little meandering.
