review 1: This book moved me on many levels. Alice and Erika have given a voice and face to all Holocaust victims. As a child growing up in 1980s Amsterdam, a city with a rich Jewish heritage this story resonated deeply. Everyone in my environment had a story of a Jewish friend or neighbour who was taken away by the Nazis during the German occupation. It was a big part of my childhood and our school curriculum. As a child of 1947 India - Pakistan Partition refugees I feel the same ache and emptiness. The need to find the missing pieces to my puzzle. Where is my home, where are my roots? In the 70s my late father went back to the city he was born in and was allowed to visit his ancestral home. Albeit with armed guards and the assurance he was not claiming ownership. My father in law ... moreand I have discussed at length going back together and visiting his ancestral home and mine. I tried locating them on Google Maps but to no avail. Thank you Mani for sharing your story. I hope one day to fill my gaps too.
review 2: The daughter of parents displaced by the Holocaust seeks answers to her mother's past and begins a 15 year search for answers. The author tied the story together nicely and it was easy to keep reading. It had several elements of interest (insight into the life of the prewar German Jewish bourgeois, a good exploration of family relationships). In the end the author is a more compelling character than her relatives. But this is perhaps more an exercise of closure for the writer than enrichment for the reader. less
