review 1: A book about urban homesteading by someone not very interested. Manny is neither an environmentalist, nor a localvore, merely a middle aged man in a fugue. I liked the writing and the narrator, but the story was a magazine piece fluffed up with an uninspired hodgepodge of childhood memoirs, reflections on a career crossroads and a failing marriage. The problems of a extraordinarily fortunate, yet struggling and myopic New Yorker is comical at times, but is mostly sad and uninteresting. If your interested in localvores read Plenty, if your interested in the struggles of the upper class read Franzen, just dont read this.
review 2: This might have been better if the author had come across as more likeable. And I don't know why he included the non-farming stories
... more in which he killed songbirds and traumatized chickens on Christmas day. For a book titled 'My Empire of Dirt', he went chapters without writing of his farm, instead going on about how he wanted his wife to have an abortion, or how he ruined a family get together by being drunk and obnoxious. Overall, not inspiring in the least. less

Horrible - poorly written, no research, painful to see this lack of garden unfold.
