review 1: Love these books. My mother grew up in Ghana in the 60s and early 70s and I like to think some of this is reminiscent of her life. The funny and over the top way that the characters act and the ridiculous sayings certainly remind me of family and a part of my culture! The drawings are rich and spirited and bring you right into this world. I especially enjoy the adventures of Innocent in Paris, so typical of that West African immigrant mentality!
review 2: I just finished Aya: Love in Yop City which is the best of Marguerite Abouet yet and easily my favorite graphic novel type thing of the past year? Two years? It's awesome. The intertwining tales of star-crossed love, loyalty, infidelity and misbehavior are thick with humor, sex, Ivorian proverbs and some good
... moreold fashioned ass-kicking. Don't start here if you are new to Aya's world; this book pays off older stories delightfully and if you jump into Love you won't have any idea why Ignace is perpetually enraged or why Bintou is so eager to see Gregoire strung up by a mob. It's beautifully written and beautifully rendered, twelve thumbs up. less

This was a worthy follow up to the first, Aya: Life in Yop City.
