review 1: A very readable account of work as a midwife in the NHS from 1989 to the present, with lots of little vignettes about the variety of experience faced. Anderson has worked around Britain in a variety of different environments, from inner city North London to Inverness, serving a more rural area as the nearest hospital for much of the Highlands. I particularly liked the fact that one of her jobs was at the hospital where my sons were born, and the author's interest in developing midwifery practice and improving services for everyone - she mentions work promoting midwife led birth and breastfeeding, and trying to introduce lonely women who've just had babies to each other, whether Kurdish refugees or millionaires in Highgate mansions. She is outspoken about her views about se... morervices, a supporter of Surestart and a critic of current government policies for the NHS and services to women and babies. Recommended.
review 2: Fantastic. Enjoyable. A great insight for aspiring midwives like myself, highlighting the good, bad and bizarre day's of a midwife! It covers so many type's of birth and experience's which made it quite a page turner. There are a few mistakes which the editor failed to pick up on, in the book, but easily forgiven.Quite a quick read as the reading voice is very much like listening to your friend telling you about their day or reading a blog post. It's just that I didn't want to read it as quick so I could enjoy it more! If I wasn't as set on becoming a midwife before, I sure am now. Thank you, Maria. less
