review 1: Bee is looking for his friend, the cow. But he can’t find him anywhere. When Bee finally finds him, he realizes that his friend is stuck and in need of assistance. So he runs to his friend the Frog to let him know and to pass on the call for help. But Frog bungles the message. Each time the message is repeated it gets changed just a little bit. Soon Bee and Cow are joined by a large group of animals wanting something different based on the message that they heard. Cow gets the assistance she needs and offers to feed them honey and milk as a way to say thank you. The book plays on the popular children’s game called telephone and each message rhymes in some way as it’s passed along. The detailed and expressive illustrations help tell the story and add a touch of whims... morey. It also has simple enough words that an early reader would enjoy reading it by themselves.I received this book free of charge from Children's Literature in exchange for my honest review.
review 2: I wasn't a huge fan of "Telephone" until I played it in French class. Now I find it an hilarious game, so I enjoyed seeing it in a picture book. These animals got way off with the message. Pictures cute. Really interesting to see them work together to get the cow unstuck. A lot of details that would be seen better in a lap-read or read-alone. But storytime still has lots of potential--especially if one can do different voices for all the different animals. How fun! Preschool might not understand why the message keeps changing, though they would probably laugh that it does. School-age might understand it better overall. less
