review 1: Excellent Read. Her parents was a prior beauty queen and her father was attractive person who appeared in magazines. I guess physical beauty is fleeting. Parents became alcoholics, when they probably could have been much more. They leave her on her own way too many times and this starts at a young age when she is left in alone in a hotel room so her parents can go to the bar. Her parents get a divorce and her mother just attracts all the wrong men. She married one that was unemployed. How a once beauty queen stoops this low is beyond me. It is surprises me how people can come up with money for alcohol and cigarettes and not food. This poor girl has no food and is terribly worried about her mother who is being beaten. She goes to live with her father who is in and out of re... morehab. When she goes to rehab, she is responsible for having classmates parents take her in. The situation she was put in was not her fault at all. I am surprised that she was able to get college degrees and pull through all that parent neglect. The book is written as if she is talking to you.See your review on the site
review 2: Marlayna in 1970s Vegas is often left struggling to find the most basic necessities of life - food and shelter. Neglected by her alcoholic parents with no stability in her life, she develops an amazing resilience and survives the most awful experiences. She tells her story with child-like language and understanding from about age 4. Several reviewers have said that they wanted to hug and cuddle her & heal her little heart, BUT more importantly the book has impacted readers to look at their own parenting and protect other children around them!! Could Marlayna wish for greater impact?? Perhaps less importantly, some have come to appreciate the genre & value of memoirs & autobiography!! less
