review 1: Reading this book is kind of like having a conversation with that uncle that knows a lot of stuff but spins it (get sidetracked?) with related, interesting tidbits. I say that to say this is so much more than just a book about a road trip the Truman's took once he was out of the White House. It is filled with anecdotes about the towns they visited, about the roads they took, and the hotels they visited. It is also contains some interesting historical bits such as the lack of pensions or secret service for retired presidents. Or, in other words, can you imagine a former POTUS taking a similar road trip across the US now?I would definitely recommend this book for history buffs, presidential trivia hounds, and folks who like a story about an awesome road ... moretrip.
review 2: I had not heard about this before, even though I was a four year old living in Albuquerque at the time!In June, 1953, former President Harry Truman took an unannounced and unpublicized road trip, escorted only by his wife. A trip of 2500 miles! Following along the President's route, the author discourses on the auto industry, McCarthyism, and the decline of Main Street America. The route was from the President's home in Missouri to the east coast and back. The Pennsylvania state trooper who pulled Harry over was quite shocked to see the Trumans!Lots of other fun and weirdness on that road trip! less
