review 1: I thoroughly enjoyed Turner's memoir of his childhood in a fundamentalist church and home. I laughed out loud many times in the reading and identified with several of his experiences. The end of Chapters Thirteen and Fourteen contain two portentous pearls. My only criticism is that Turner moved too quickly from the stories of his childhood to the conclusion of his book. Perhaps I will find the missing pieces in his other works.
review 2: It was okay. Not quite as funny as jonathan acuff, but I think he wants to be. And not quite as insightful as Donald miller, but I think he wants to be. So what you get is exactly what the subtitle promises: ONE persons journey TOWARD God. It isn't an indictment of all fundamentalism, though other reviews have accused it of being
... more so. And while I wish there had been more healing at the end, I looked at the jacket and remembered it was a "journey toward"-- and not an "arrival at"-- a good place. I will say that the greatest chapter was when he went with his dad and heard the conversations between his fundie sad and his hellhound friends. The authors dad comes across as a genuine Christ follower who has won the respect, though not the souls of his friends. The author hints at the impact theseConversations had on him. I wish he'd unpacked them more. less

Growing up in a baptist church, I could totally relate to most of his stories!

This book makes Blue Like Jazz seem like Augustine's Confessions.

Entertaining and honest in the style of Anne Lamott.
