Beautiful Ruins – Rievaulx Abbey

I enjoy ruins and abandoned buildings – any kind and any time.

Thursday woke me with bright sunshine and the promise of adventure in the air, so I caught a bus to Helmsley, stopped for some much needed coffee at Mannion & Co and walked the first few miles of the Cleveland Way to Rievaulx Abbey. The sun was out in full August mood, birds twittered, sheep baa-ed, and not much else was to be heard along the trail. Rievaulx proofed a bit more busy, with children playing hide and seek between the ruins, seniors picnicking on benches with gorgeous views of the abbey, a number of people out on the hunt for the perfect selfie spot, and a general air of holidays about the place.

The free audio guide brought images from monastic past to life, as I strolled through the ruins, albeit a little too quickly to fully enjoy myself because I still had to brave the walk back to Helmsley to catch the last bus of the day and avoid being stuck out, however much I would have enjoyed a night under the stars with the peaceful memories of centuries past amongst the ruins.
