review 1: While there is a lot to be learned from this book about how war gets a person, whole groups of people, whole countries down, I don't think it's written very strongly.Since she's a journalist I think using that voice combined with her own thoughts would be more effective then the weird, almost saccharine voice that tries to be poetic. It's a real contradiction to what she is writing about which is how war is the opposite of things like poetry, so to go to the language she uses is odd. However, she has a lot of good stories to tell even if she is telling them poorly, and they are stories I don't think we hear enough. So I would recommend this book, the writing may be weak but it's not something hindering the point she is making too much. Just an overhaul of her writing style... more would make it stronger.
review 2: At first I wasn't sure of this book, it started out quite slowly. Towards the end it got a lot better and ended up becoming one of my favourite "journalists at warzones" books. I was torn whether to give it a 4 or a 5, but the 5 seemed just, since the writing is so good. The book is beautifully written and it tells us about horrible things which creates a great contrast in my mind. War is a complex thing and this book showcases that very well. less

A well-written account of a journalist covering war. It got a little heavy in some parts though.

Through messily interwoven narratives, the message was well conveyed
