review 1: This is a beautifully written memoir about a son’s quest to find out what happened the night his father died. I couldn’t put the book down and read it from start to finish in one sitting. I was hooked by the mystery but I loved the stories of the old newspapermen, of growing up in Chicago, of the author's meetings with his father's colleagues and his difficulty in establishing an adult relationship with his mother. Nicely written story.
review 2: I agree with other reviewers who say that this is a really long book without an appropriate payoff... terribly non-scandalous ending. Bummer. That said, it describes the "newspapermen" of the 50s really well and the book is very nicely written, so I enjoyed it. The author's struggle may not have resonated that
... moremuch with me also because (happily) my parents are both still living. But the author is an excellent writer and journalist. less

Well written and engaging but not really a mystery. More a family drama.
