Ya know, it really says how far we have fallen when other countries’ leaders have to remind us of how far America has fallen, knowing that America is an entity of wonder in the world even if they disagree with us, they all seem to be acknowledging what we have always been, a beacon of hope for immigrants, a country built on the backs of slaves, but which has always seen a greater calling from its get go. “All Men are created equal” ALL not some, not just white, not only from rich countries, ALL. So, should we want people from Haiti, El Savador, African nations yes. ALL deserve the right to Life, Liberty and Pursuit of Happiness. So, should we send back people to countries unprepared to receive them, no. Should we rip apart families, no. Do we send people back to certain death or poverty when we have taken them already into our fold, no. What does that say about us as a people, it would say we suck, big time. But worse we will be betraying everything as a Nation we hold dear. We have been a moral compass for the world when it comes to Human Rights and now our compass is all screwed up. It matters not one whit that this president does not represent the wants and mind of the majority of the country, including myself; it only matters what we as a Nation do, we as citizens are responsible in the end. Why, because the president works for us, we don’t work for him. That he is completely out of his f’n mind doesn’t matter either. He was elected and so it stands this way.
Do I blame Trump, not really, he’s the same as he’s always been. I blame the people who voted for him, not because they didn’t know he was the way he was but because they didn’t care; I blame the electoral college who had the chance to do the right thing, the thing they were actually invented TO DO, save us from ourselves; I blame the Senate who so cowardly did not over rule the Electoral College. These are the people who could have made the difference between Right and Very, very wrong, but none of them had the guts to do it. I blame them. We had checks and balances in place to prevent this travesty but people loved their money and position over country. History will not be kind to any of them.
Lest we forget-
The New Colossus
Not like the brazen giant of Greek fame,
With conquering limbs astride from land to land;
Here at our sea-washed, sunset gates shall stand
A mighty woman with a torch, whose flame
Is the imprisoned lightning, and her name
Mother of Exiles. From her beacon-hand
Glows world-wide welcome; her mild eyes command
The air-bridged harbor that twin cities frame.
“Keep ancient lands, your storied pomp!” cries she
With silent lips. “Give me your tired, your poor,
Your huddled masses yearning to breathe free,
The wretched refuse of your teeming shore.
Send these, the homeless, tempest-tost to me,
I lift my lamp beside the golden door!”
Emma Lazarus
