review 1: an interesting glimpse into an interesting subculture. the punk house showcases a diverse mix of Muslims from different backgrounds. a lot of the discussions are illuminating, although they often drag on too long. Rabeya is the most interesting character by far, although in spots i could tell she was created by a male writer. there is a lot i feel could be better defined in this book, but i like its attitude and ability to shake things up.
review 2: I loved reading this book. It was refreshing to get a view of Islam different that the one we are bombarded with every day. It may seem chaotic, and it does overflow with the marks of masculinity of the writer (the better writers are the one that can adopt a gender neutral voice, so it doesn't go closing our any par
... moret of the audience), but even the pungent blow to your nose fell well in place. It can rub you wrong, it can make you feel uncomfortable, it can make you want to yell "can't you *pretend* to be civilized?", and all that is also what makes it so beautiful as well. It's simply live. Love it or leave it. less
