review 1: At first glance, this novel seems to fall into the same category as "Eat, Pray, Love": the modern middle/upper-class woman searches for meaning and discovers herself. Hallelujah. However, I enjoyed this book more than the others I've read in the same style for several important reasons. I appreciate Colston's liberal use of irreverent humor, self-awareness, and accessibility - you don't have to travel to Bali to follow in Holly's footsteps. Even more important, perhaps, is Holly's refreshing - and heartbreaking - self-evaluation. She confronts her demons (or "anti-goddesses"), and shows tangible growth in her self-image, worldview, and maturity. She tackles such difficult issues as eating disorders, narcissism, entitlement, and prejudice, and in doing so, permits the reade... morer to confront their own egos and issues. A great read, fun and rewarding in equal parts.
review 2: I work hard. My mind gets pulled every which way and when I get home I'm tired, my brain doesn't want to engage and my body wants to do nothing more than to collapse, so when I pick up a book I am looking for another world to immerse myself in for a while. What I am not looking for is a book detailing the trials and tribulations of somebody else's life. I know that is not the intent with this book, but for me that was the effect. Probably I just wasn't in the right frame of mind when I picked it up, but whatever the reason this one just didn't grab me and I have to confess that after struggling bravely for nearly 100 ages I gave up. I'm not going to say "don't read it" because it might be to somebody else's taste, but for me this one is a thumbs down. Boring! less
