review 1: A most interesting book. The tortured life of this young man was a bit difficult to comprehend, but the story of the Gypsy life-style in England was very clear. Limited resources, extreme lack of education, rigid cultural norms. This is not a sociology book, but one person's story. Abuse dominates, love includes accepting physical abuse. Many have rated this book as exceptional. It was good to read and learn, but.......
review 2: This was a very intense and at times, hard to read look at the life of a boy who grew up in the world of the Romany Gypies. He lived a very trying, abusive and controlled life. The gypsy culture is one that is very set in traditional ways and different values and morals than of some in the traditional world. Mikey was abused p... morehysically, verbally and mentally by his father and sexually by his uncle. He had a secret that he had to hide from everyone he knew. If this secret was found out, he knew he would not only be rejected and shunned by his family and people, but also possible killed.He did eventually find his own way out, but it was risky and painful. less
