review 2: It's a shame readers from other countries complain about bad English translation. In Portuguese, it is a wonderful book. I read 110 pages on the first day of reading. I simply couldn't stop reading. Milton Hatoum is a completely unkown author in Brazil. We have a cultural separation between the South and the North of Brazil. It is the first time I read a book from an Amazon author and I'm fascinated about it. The names and the nicknames are very well chosen. Normally the nicknames have also other meanings in Portuguese that represents the personality of that character. For example, the nickname 'Mundo' is a contraction of Raimundo, but also means 'World'. I believe that author wanted to say Mundo could see the world and didn't have a limited mind as his father. The story explore common and complex familiar relationships in Brazil and the friendship of two boys, Lavo and Mundo, Lavo is poor and Mundo is rich, but has conflicts with his father because Mundo wants to be an artist. Basically, there are three familiar story ( described by different people during the book). Lavo's family. His parents died on a wreck. He lives with his aunt Ramira ( an old single woman who sews clothes at home) and her brother Ranulfo, uncle Ran, who doesn't work and only live drinking and thinking about life, he is almost an artist. Mundo's mother is named Alícia. Alícia was very poor when she was a kid and lived close to Lavo's family house. She was a daughter of an Indian woman who couldn't speak Portuguese possibly with an English man. She also has a sister Alsira. When they were kids they couldn't go to school because they had no register, they didn't exist for the government. But this English man paid a private teacher for them. Alicia used to date with Lavo's uncle Run, but one they his sister humiliated Alicia and she promised herself she would become reach and humiliates Ramira. He gave up with Ran and married a Portuguese millionary, Jano. It's not possible to know for sure, but with Jano, Alicia had Mundo. At least Jano thinks Mundo is his son and he hates him. Jano is a business man who wants Mundo to be powerful and manage his business and Mundo only thinks about art. They are in constant conflict. The book starts when Mundo goes to the same school of Lavo and they became friends less
