review 1: I've read other books with the recipes-and-life-stories forat and didn't like them much. the recipes were always in my way. Not so in this book, where the story usually made me very interested in the upcoming recipe! I've even marked a few to try. Yes, Wizenberg is much younger than I am and her life experiences completely different, but I found her style easy to read and entertaining, which is what I was hoping it would be. I will try reading her blog (which I'd never heard of) to see if it's more of the same. I would like that. I've tried blogging and it's hard enough just to write regularly, never mind staying interesting. So I do admire those who manage it!
review 2: "A Homemade Life" was Wizenberg's first book after starting her blog, Organette, but I happ
... moreened to read it after her second publication called "Delancey." Oddly enough, "A Homemade Life" delivered the emotion that seemed lacking from its successor, which centers on Wizenberg's hectic year opening a restaurant and could have been riveting. Where "Delancey" was lacking in introspection, glossing over mentions of serious depression and marital difficulties, a "Homemade Life" beautifully weaved Wizeberg's experiences of romance, loss and family with food memories and appealing recipes. It's exactly the kind of book I hoped to read while traveling for my honeymoon, though I suspect the combination of humor, culinary exploration and emotion would appeal to me (and many others) at any time. This one is a keeper, and I'd highly recommend it if you're looking for a good, quick read on all things gastronomic. less
