review 1: Certainly a fun read, she has a great sense of humor. The middle part of the book was definitely the strongest. I just don't think she ever got deep enough into the conflicts that she kept alluding to. Opening a restaurant is ridiculously hard work; anyone who has done that will tell you, so I'm not sure how that caught her off guard. And it almost seems like she blames her husband for finally following through on something he says he wants to do (unlike his earlier endeavors building a boat and making violins)as the reason she backs away from her writing career. Honestly, the way it was set up I was surprised to find out they're still married, even though in reading the book the conflicts never seem to be as big as advertised. It was a good read, though, very interesting ... moreand well crafted.
review 2: this is a book about food, relationships, and people's relationships with food. what's not to love? i've never read the author's blog (orangette), which i imagine is some kind of internet sensation, but rather picked up this book on the sheer merit of its title and the fact that it is about food. i am now creating saturday plans and vacation itineraries around some of the restaurants discussed in this book. this is all to say that i really enjoyed reading this book. less
