review 1: Autobiographical account of an NFL player's injury-plagued 7 year career. It is a quite an entertaining read. Jackson's memoir is candid, wryly humorous, and quite thoughtful. It's a vivid portrayal of what it's like to a be an NFL player, not a superstar, but a player on the fringes who is constantly looking over his shoulder for fear of losing his oh-so-tenuous job - and physical health. Jackson, out of the NFL by age 29 and never a starter, actually had a career that was much longer, better, and more lucrative than the average. He is a talented writer. Good to read during football season.

... morehe NFL is honest, funny, wry, straightforward, and honest. I've said honest twice because it's this honesty-- delivered with healthy levels of self-awareness and institutional critique-- that really marks this book as worth the read. The last chapter, in which Nate unflinchingly describes his experiences after being cut from the Broncos and his desperate attempts to claw his way back into professional football, is gut-wrenching. Nate perfectly captures the world of professional football: the constant pain, the constant striving, the intense focus, and, overall, the machine in which the athletes are mere cogs. less

Fascinating subject matter, but he writes the way you'd expect an NFL player to write. Ugh.
