review 1: At first, this seemed so nothing but the more I read, the more I liked. Stibbe is incredibly funny but with a very dry wit that only benefits from cumulative reading. I loved the transition from nanny to student - there was something very exciting to read about her return to school as a 'mature student' and her poetic ode to Seamus Heaney was worth the price of the book. All in all, a sweet and lovely book that has a place on the shelf next to 84 Charing Cross Road and Laurie Colwin.
review 2: Droll little book that consists of a series of letters originally written in the 1980s by the author to her sister, after the former moved to London to serve as nanny to the household of Mary-Kay Wilmers, editor of the London Review of Books. Various literary types come a
... morend go from the home, and the author is amusingly unimpressed, holding her own in arguments, and matter of factly relaying snippets of dialogue to her sister. She parries with her cheeky young charges more like a big sister than an authority figure, and warmly portrays Wilmers dry, economical way of having the last word in a discussion. A delightful book that I was sorry to see end. less
