Horror Writers Fan Club w/ Sean Michael

Hi Dreamers!

I was very enthusiastic when Dreamspinner announced their Dreamspun Beyond line. I enjoy writing paranormal stories and all the tropes that come with that. However, when I sat down to write it, I found that instead of a shifter or vampire story, what I wanted to do was a ghost story. I had this team of gay ghost hunters pop up in my head, and they promised to bring the boo factor along with the love story.

I was nervous because while I enjoy reading horror, I didn’t know if I had the chops to write it. Luckily, as this was also a romance, I didn’t have to write heavy horror, just some boo and some gross and the characters gave that up to me fairly easily. In the end, I loved writing this book – it was a lot of fun.

My biggest influence in the horror genre is Stephen King. He is in fact one of my favorite authors, period. I like his stories because they aren’t just horror for horror’s sake. Plus I really appreciate that with Stephen King, in the end, no matter the premise, the horrific beast, the real horror in the book comes from the humans.

I also love and prescribe to King’s writing advice and it is always my number one piece of advice when asked. You wanna be a writer? Then you need to write. Every day.

Who is your favorite horror writer and why?

Blurb:

Hunting ghosts and finding more than they bargained for.

Blaine Franks is a member of the paranormal research group the Supernatural Explorers. When the group loses their techie to a cross-country move, newly graduated Flynn Huntington gets the job. Flynn fits in with the guys right off the bat, but when it comes to him and Blaine, it’s more than just getting along.

Things heat up between Blaine and Flynn as they explore their first haunted building together, an abandoned hospital. Their relationship isn’t all that progresses, though, and soon it seems that an odd bite on Blaine’s neck has become much more.

Hitchhiking ghosts, a tragic love story forgotten by time, and the mystery of room 204 round out a romance where the things that go bump in the night are real.

Bio:

Best-selling author Sean Michael is a maple leaf–loving Canadian who spends hours hiding out in used book stores. With far more ideas than time, Sean keeps several documents open at all times. From romance to fantasy, paranormal and sci-fi, Sean is limited only by the need for sleep—and the periodic Beaver Tail.

Sean fantasizes about one day retiring on a secluded island populated entirely by horseshoe crabs after inventing a brain-to-computer dictation system. Until then, Sean will continue to write the old-fashioned way.
