review 1: I rated this book five stars - "It was amazing." It's not that the writing is (or isn't) spectacular or particularly literary. What is amazing, to me, is the life of Phoebe Snetsinger, as expertly documented by Olivia Gentile in the biography called Life List. Phoebe started birding in her 30s and at some point decided to set a record for seeing the most bird species. I'm a birder so I understand the thrill of seeing a new bird. Phoebe took birding and thrill-seeking to supreme levels that I never will. I repeatedly looked up from this book and said to my spouse, "This lady's crazy," "She's obsessed," "Incredible!," all the while envying her neverending globe-trotting adventures to exotic wild places with beautiful scenery and fantastic avifauna. I finished the book incred... moreibly moved how a person can truly decide to live her dream and live life to the fullest, and how lovely it is to be able to experience great joy and wonder through nature. Finally, I felt anew my concern - shared by Phoebe - for the vanishing wild places around the world that these birds call home.
review 2: The book is a story of a passionate woman who inspires you and makes you a little jealous. The story is more inspiring than the writing and that's what makes this book fall short of being a 'good book'.Of the more interesting thoughts that the book kindles is whether you see Phoebe Snetsinger's relentless pursuit of her 'hobby' as being selfish or that which was the reason she was even alive. I for one stand for the latter. Read this book if you're looking for an inspiring story or if you're interested in birds. less
