review 1: Target audience: K-3Summary: Tony Baloney is a macaroni penguin who likes to get into a lot of trouble. His parents want to teach him empathy and how to apologize to when he makes trouble. However, Tony does not want to say that he is sorry, because he believes that he is not nice in his heart. After 20 or so minutes, Tony is hungry and decides that apologizing might be worth it if he get to eat fish tacos. He apologizes to his sister and she allows him to be the boss of play time for a short while and he forces the babies to pretend to be kittens. His sister apologizes back and says he never has to play the kitten ever again. Tony is now given his chance to strike back or to behave as he has been told. Did Tony learn his lesson in the end? Activity: Students shou... moreld recall and write down past events in which they did not did not treat others properly or times when they were mistreated themselves. Then, each student should try to remember if they had apologized to the person(s) they hurt or if they had been apologized to. Students should now reflect about how they felt during such situations and if they felt as though they did the right thing in the end. Ryan, P., & Fotheringham, E. (2011). Tony Baloney. New York: Scholastic Press.
review 2: This is a good book to get a discussion going about emotions and anger with kids. Tony Baloney is a penguin and middle "child." The Botherson Babies Baloney chew on his toys and his big sister bosses him around. Well, sometime his stuffed animal Dandelion just can't take it anymore and loses his temper! Tony Baloney goes to his hideout to calm down: "I am not feeling nicely in my heart. How long does it take for nicely to creep in?" Bright, colorful illustrations. less
