review 1: A British Millennial writing about his seven months of combat in Afghanistan and trying to shoehorn himself somehow into his own pop culture pretensions of what that should mean. While he mocks the hoary clichés of war literature and film, he appears to desperately trying to validate himself in comparison to them. In the end, he simply ends up living the cliché of the sensitive, but troubled veteran now looking at a world that simply doesn't understand him because of the horror he has seen. Written by someone whose reflexive stance is to mock anything that might appear sentimental or genuine, who can't understand why he feels so empty when he can't find anything to replace it.

... moresh soldier – also includes his training. All I have to say is I don’t think I could handle being in the army. I’d hate the pointless (ok, I know they’re not) drills, and be bored to death. If I did go out, I think I’d want to plan a year in advance, so I could at least get in shape, so I’d just be super tired, instead of, well, whatever is more extreme than that. less

part way through and really captures a completely different view of military life today.
