review 1: I love how the narrative flows in this one. Very every day, with snippets of unexpected humor. Despite the fact that there is day-to-day dryness in it, that language itself is anything but dry. It's one of those novels that egg you on when you read it. This is what makes the prose charming.I also love how the story itself is a standout. Although stories with talking pets are abundant, this one successfully shows the trope in a brand new light. This is what makes it so fresh.There are some heartbreaks, too. But the ending, though sad, is comforting.I like how the conflicts and the resolutions are paced. It doesn't feel rushed or contrived, which makes this novel effective in its suspension of the reader's disbelief.Overall, a very worthwhile book to read. For dog lovers, mo... morest especially.
review 2: I really enjoyed this book.I thought the story was going to be all about Paul and his dog, but it was much more than that. It was about family and the complicated relationships we all have in our life. It's about dealing with decisions we have made and have to make and it's about making changes in our life that we know we had to make, but either ignore our inner thoughts or are too lazy to do the right thing.I have had a dog in my home for the past 17 years. Stella reminded me of my yellow lab who gave everyone he met a warm welcome and left them knowing that he loved them. The idea of a talking dog seemed silly at first. But as a dog lover, Pete nailed it. His writing was so true to what I think a dog would say. While writing this, I hear my 18 year son talking to our Golden Doodle ~ wonder what he said back.
