review 1: I had the advantage of reading the reviews of this book before starting it which I think helped set my expectations and prepared me for the two main parts of the book. It's a well written and interesting book - although I have to agree that the constant "name dropping" is a bit annoying. My impression is that the author is just trying to give credit and recognition where he thinks it's due, and also show the connections that were formed, but it did mar my enjoyment a little.

... morewitched away from field research to bureaucrat at increasingly high levels, and I completely lost interest as the political infighting continued. I would have preferred more details about drug research developments. The first half of the book was worth reading. less
