review 1: Though a bit disturbing in parts, the author has done a remarkable job of describing the culture of a country torn by war, contention between factions and power-hungry leaders. The family dynamic was beautifully portrayed in detailed interactions amid times of turmoil, economic distress and personal sacrifice. The resilience of this particular family is inspiring as is the willingness of good people within a threatened culture to protect, share and support one another. Very worthwhile read for anyone desiring to understand daily life in Afghanistan in recent years. It also provides a glimpse into the fascinating art of carpet weaving.
review 2: It was incredible. I've read a lot of books about Afghanistan, trying to understand exactly what has/is going on t
... morehere and why it is all such a mess. This book explained it better than any of the others. Omar takes the reader through specific incidents of his childhood and young adulthood and they are so intimate, personal and horrifying that you have to wonder how people survive all he has been through As he states so well in his concluding remarks, there are so many stories like his that need to be told, must be heard, and should never be allowed to happen again- yet here we are, with millions suffering unimaginable horrors daily, and it never ends. Let's have American school kids take a break from the mandatory readings of The Great Gatsby and The Pearl and have them read instead A Fort of Nine Towers and maybe the world will begin to change for the better. The most important book I've read since I Am Malala. less
