review 1: This is a book that will stay with me for a long time. When you see images of people fleeing war on the news, it is hard to feel connected to them- they are faceless, nameless, far away. The author of this memoir brings the horror of the last 20 years in Afghanistan to life. These are real people, with real jobs, hobbies, personalities, desires, dreams, dislikes, weaknesses, strengths. By sheer accident of birth, they are born into a place full of violence and fear and death. And yet they march on, trying to piece together a life out of the chaos. I will not be able to watch a news story about bombing raids or "factional fighting" again in the same way, without a much clearer vision of what those battles mean for the people living beneath those rockets and between the sn... moreipers firing.
review 2: I enjoyed his personal story very much but enjoyed more the modern history lesson provided therein. It was instructional to learn the story of the transition in Afghanistan from a monarchy to what it is now. This was specially true of the chaos that the mujaheddin created in that country after the Russians left. Nowadays they are painted as heroes of the revolution where as in this book they are presented ad murderers and rapists. The narrative is full of love and compassion a family need to stay together through all kinds of tribulations. less

Story of life and love from a child's point of view. A gem I randomly picked at the library.
