review 1: This book wasn't at all what I was expecting when I picked it up off the shelf in the homeschooling section at the library. It's written more like a memoir than a how-to book and was actually pretty funny. I could see some people taking offense to this book, as the author gently pokes fun at the ultra-religious subgroup of homeschoolers. But I found it all pretty interesting to learn about how many different types of homeschooling families there are. The author took it upon herself to "infiltrate" (if you will) conferences and meetings of both the ultra-religious homeschoolers and the radical hippie unschoolers. And she attended a conservative Christmas homeschool prom and a homeschool graduation ceremony. All of these chapters pandered to a curiosity of mine that probably... more would not be satiated by most homeschooling books, so I got a kick out of that.
review 2: This is a great memoir/look at homeschooling about an L.A. mom who decides to homeschool her 5th grader and what happens after that. While I wish she would have included more detail about her curriculum, she offers a lot of insight into the history of homeschooling and the paths other homeschoolers take (unschooling, online, etc.) Very funny read with a very encouraging ending--not anti-public school at all :) Loved it. less

Comical, but not really all that helpful in terms of studying homeschooling.
