The Belly Dancer is my first novel and guess where it’s set? Istanbul, of course, where I lived for 7 years. I’m trying to find a publisher or agent for it. This is a disheartening task as, especially with online applications, they rarely reply. Canongate, however, wanted a paper copy and after about 3 months sent me a nice letter, saying ‘With our forward publishing list so full, we are having to make some tough decisions over new acquisitions, and are doubtlessly missing out on some gems.’ Well, naturally, my book is a gem!
I’ve been reading it to my local writers’ group, the Tyne and Esk, once a fortnight for the past year and am now half way through. They seem to be in agreement that it’s improving, either that or they’re becoming too bored to comment! I don’t believe this though – you must have faith in your writing to survive all the rejections.
