Hi hi. So, my nanny was leaving for xmas holidays and she asks me to make her a blazer from the Ankara (wax print) she had, not the usual skirt and peplum blouse. I have the Simplicity 2446 Amazing Fit pattern which I had never sewn before, but I figured this was a great time to dive in.
I simply followed the instructions as it is and the rest is history. I’ll give a detailed review when I am done. I had access to Mimi G’s Blazer course, but I’ll save that for when I have more time.
I didn’t trace off the size I needed onto a separate paper, since the outfit is not for me, I simply traced it out with chalk directly on the fabric. Getting the first piece just right is usually the time waster, after that all the other pieces just flow naturally.
Although the pattern only has 11 pieces, less if you skip the pockets, you have to cut several pieces out of both lining and interfacing, so you are cutting out multiples and might end up with about 22 pieces total.
This fabric had a linear pattern, in order to match it up, I used the lengthen/shorten line as a guide while cutting to keep the pattern pieces matching up. I also used my notches as a guide for pattern matching the front, back, collar and sleeve pieces. All in all, the general symmetry was maintained.
I spent the better part of a week on this while, preparing to move homes, it was a very busy christmas holiday really. There in a lot of interfacing on this project, more than the pieces that are required, but it really adds to the overall stability of the jacket.
I spent a good amount of time, ironing and interfacing and basting, than actually sewing the thing together. A note on the basting, use pins, tacking and un-tacking can get really tedious, I quickly found out.
So this is where I am now, I just have to stitch it together, insert sleeves, and repeat everything again with the lining and facings
