review 1: Lower.A bit further down.Keep it middling, ok? I'm talking about expectations here. This novel arrives with high commendations and there certainly are elements that warrant interest. It's about a librarian! One of the principal characters shares one of my names - correctly spelt too The Australian national anthem gets a guernsey and becomes a running joke. And there are ferrets. Lucy is a young children's librarian who kidnaps her favourite library patron, precocious 10 year old Ian, ostensibly to save him from an evangelical Pastor who aims to foster normal, straight kids who, on the surface, may not appear normal or straight. And so they embark on a road trip, navigation directed by Ian as Lucy abdicates responsibility in a deluge of soul-searching and contemplating her ... moreRussian heritage. And for me, there's the rub; I couldn't be convinced of Lucy's motives and their meandering road trip lasts far too long.
review 2: There are very few books that I can't finish so it's notable when it happens. I got as far as chapter 6 before giving up in disgust. Why is it OK to ridicule Evangelical Christians? Why is it a no-no for parents to monitor what their children read? I will agree that some parents don't discuss, they just deny, but I had had enough at that point and didn't see the need to further aggravate myself. less
