review 1: I've read all of Reyna Grande's books, this one is the best because its not a novel this is HER life. Very well written, sad, honest and truthful. I've actually met a women who "this is her story too" so of course I gave her a copy of The Distance Between Us so she can understand that she is not alone, this happens to many many children left with family in Mexico (or any other country) while the parents come to America to look for a better life but in the end the family is torn apart and the children grow up without the parents. Only someone like Reyna Grande who has walked in those shoes can tell this story the rest of us can only listen not judge. I recommend this book to anybody who thinks you don't need both parents to have a happy childhood.
review 2: I th... moreought this was a great book. It is really sad though and taught me again and again the importance of families. The governor of MD asked that everyone in the state read this book so my friend picked it for book club and I'm really looking forward to our discussion next week. I think it brings up a lot of good questions such as what is really important and what are the roles of fathers and mothers and what do our children deserve. less
