review 1: I balk a bit at the Brooklynite pretension that it, in its last heaving breaths before gentrification began to overcome the neighborhood, was in any way a last Bohemia; but nonetheless I thoroughly enjoyed this nearly stream of consciousness recounting of the author's decade plus residing in Brooklyn in the nineties. It's gritty and self-indulgent and purposefully damp and fringey; it makes for some entertaining stories.
review 2: A breathless recounting of the twenty year development of a now trendy and affluent New York City neighborhood from desolate and dangerous to safely trendy. The author tries hard to brag about how dangerous his life was in the "bad/good old days" but does not do it in a literarily compelling fashion. There are a very few exceptions,
... more and these are welcome. A highly journalistic approach but a memoiristic book is the wrong place for that approach. less
