review 1: This is a sweet book about family and community and small town Louisiana. In the beginning he describes life in their town: hunting, fishing, nature and sweet old ladies. It's enought o make you jealous that you didn't grow up there. But later he shows you glimpses of the ugly side: grudges, stubbornness, and mistrust of the "other". Ruthie Lemming had a truly inspiring life. But the story is more complicated than that. Reading it makes me want to be a better person. And for me that's always the mark of a good book.
review 2: This true story, about a young mother and wife diagnosed with an aggressive, terminal cancer brought back so many memories for me...how her little town came together to support her, and her family, during this time was amazing. It reminded
... more me of all the kindness that we also received: from fundraisers, to meals, to hat and scarf parties, to people watching our kids, and doing our dishes, the list goes on and on. Get the box of Kleenex out for this one, and be humbled by Ruthie and how she found strength during her storm. Wish I would have known her. I'll be toasting to Ruthie on May 15, her birthday. less
