review 1: Some books are well written. Some books have interesting subject matter. And some books are just necessary. While no one will ever praise Roger Dean Kiser's "The White House Boys" for being well written, Kiser does have an interesting story to tell, and judging from the online discussion boards about the horrific events that unfolded at the Dozier School of Boys over the past 11 decades, the story needs as much exposure as it can get.As hard as it is to believe, some people in the town of Marianna, FL are still trying to brush off what happened there, blaming the victims while trying to safeguard the reputations of the complicit. And what happened there is a shame.Over the course of many years children as young as ten were savagely beaten and raped, some of them murdered... more in the course of their abuse, while the town of Marianna and the state of Florida stood idly by. Kiser and his fellow victims have been trying to tell this story to anyone who will listen for the past 20 years. Finally, in 2008 the State of Florida Juvenile Justice Division fessed up and tried to make amends by installing an honorary plaque to the victims by "the white house", a white stucco building on the site of the school where the alleged abuse occurred. If they had hoped matters would end there, they were mistaken. As the story built momentum a research team from the University of South Florida got permission to exhume the bodies in unmarked graves on the school site. To date they have found the bodies of 55 children. DNA testing is underway to discover the identity of the dead, and then, at last, one would assume, charges will be brought. For those in Marianna who want this to go away, the nightmare is just beginning. As for Kiser, his nightmare is graphically documented in The White House Boys. It's one of those books that leaves you feeling depressed at the inhumanity of man and flabbergasted that such injustice can go on for so long. The fact that, even now, there are people who want to downplay and dismiss these crimes is appalling. It makes you passionate about seeing justice done. Anyone with an ounce of humanity in them should read Kiser's book and take a stand. Some books are just necessary.
review 2: Just finished this book and was shocked how horrid humans treat others and not let is bother them. The horror that these young children suffered at the hands of adults. The author tells us of the beatings and abuse that he suffered and other young children while staying in this facility as youth. It is a miracle that he is alive today to tell this story when many children lost theirlives and innocence at the hand of these adult that where suppose to teach then how to live a good live in the outside world. The book shows us how even something that was meant for good can go horribly wrong when one turns a blind eye to things they don't want to see or know about. This book is worth reading, but be prepared to be upset by what you read. You will brought to tears and your heart will break for these children. less
