review 1: I'm in the camp of readers who are befuddled by the adoration for this's book. Yes it is amusing in a satisfied lower upperclass (eton/Coldstream guards) kind of way. Some quite prejudiced and snotty comments I thought. RM definitely has a good turn of phrase but fail to see what contribution CM makes with his very obvious comments. The old man comes through for him from beyond. The astounding thing is the acceptance of alcoholism and drunk driving.
review 2: I suggested this book for my book group, as we wanted to try something funny and this had been very well reviewed. Having read it, I have no idea why! Charlie Mortimer wanders through life spoiled and wasting the many opportunities that cross his path. Despite the humourous tone of his father's letters, it
... more is clearly deeply painful for his parents which I found uncomfortable. Charlie's contribution to the book is anodyne comments underneath some, but not all of the letters which add little in terms of explanation or context to the book. Whilst his father was clearly an amusing man, I found the letters became repetitive and much of the humour is barbed and at other people's expense. Most of us in the group had a similar response to the book. less

This is a charming and funny book. At times rather poignant. Highly recommended.
