review 1: This book is a nice easy read. Ideal for a holiday or when you want something gentle, funny and not too taxing for the brain. It is a series of letters from Charles' father to Charles (nicknamed "Lupin") from when Charles is about 15 until the father dies. The letters are a window into the British upper middle class society. The father was a racing journalist and he had a way with words. Everyone has a nickname: Nidnod for the mother, Miss Bossy Pants for one if the sisters, Hot Hand Henry for a son-in-law. (We never find out why he has this nickname). He can sum up in a few words the weather at the time writing from "Hypothermia house". The anecdotes are amusing. Charles obviously caused the family some distress, especially when he left the army, the nickname Lupin does s... moreeem to suit him, but the father's love and acceptance of his son does shine through.
review 2: Rarely take the trouble to review but motivated to leave a note for this book as I'm both bewildered and dismayed to see it garnered so much negative feedback. Mortimer's Sr.'s letters are deeply funny; his writing reaches that enviably rare pinnacle of being bitterly satirical yet friendly -- the tone of a man who purports to have given up on life but secretly still finds joy in miscellaneous corners of his existence. less

Made me laugh a lot. Wish my very occasional letters to my children were like this.
