review 1: Sam StevensMr. Rich English 1010 November 2011Book Review DWilliams, Roy. Hard Work. Chapel Hill, North Carolina: Algonquin Books, 2009. Hard Work, by Roy Williams, is a truly inspiring story of how the head coach of the University of North Carolina men’s basketball team, Roy Williams, got to where he is today. The book traces the improbable story of Roy Williams, legendary head coach of Kansas and now North Carolina. Roy's family had no money but his mother instilled values that would serve him for a lifetime. Through hard work and determination Roy overcame his struggles reach where he is today. Roy Williams grew up in a small town suburb outside of Asheville, North Carolina. He grew up without a father, therefore his mother worked two jobs to provide for the family. H... moreis family struggled to make it by, but Roy knew he had one passion, and that was basketball. To afford college Roy had to go door to door selling calendars for two years before he could afford to go to the University of North Carolina. Once he got there, he became a student assistant basketball coach under Dean Smith, and that’s when he decided he wanted to become a coach. After years of rising through the coaching ranks, Roy got his dream job, head coach at the University of North Carolina. Roy’s journey was heartwarming to me as a reader to see all that he went through as a person and succeed. The book portrays an excellent story of how one man reached his dream even with an unfortunate upbringing. Another reason I enjoyed this book was because it provided an in depth look at what it is like to be a head coach at a major university. Roy’s work ethic can inspire all readers to do just that little more to get over the top and be successful. “Hard work doesn’t guarantee success, but without it you have no chance” (Williams 250). I love this quote and all that it stands for, it is very hard to get anywhere in life when you are not willing to work hard. For me as a reader I tried to apply this quote along with others into my own life. I had a great experience reading this book and it taught me a lot. It also makes me appreciate how lucky I am to have all that I have while I’m growing up. I also have embraced the fact that success comes with a high price of a lot of hard work and perseverance. Roy Williams’ writing in the book was superb and did a great job of telling his inspiring life story. Hard Work by Roy Williams is a great read for any sports fan that wants to read an inspiring story. The book is wonderfully written and drew me in as a reader immediately and lasted till the end. It shows readers nothing is given in life but you can get anywhere in life if you work hard enough.
review 2: Who watched Coach Williams as a player as he played against my brother in High School; then played against him as a player while he was the coach at Owen HS; and finally played for him at UNC during his first year on staff and I really enjoyed this book. If you are a basketball, sports or UNC fan this is a must read. There is also a lot to be learned about leadership, life and a strong work ethic here. I highly recommend this book. less
