review 1: I think this could have been a good book with some major editing, but as it is, it struck me more as a series of blog posts than one cohesive unit. Throughout the book, Gill pulls off one hat and puts on another (now I'm being funny, now I'm being inspirational, now I'm being touching) but each voice lacks depth. The situations (e.g, having a slumber party as an adult) didn't really provide enough hilarity or tension to be interesting on their own - the risks she takes all come with a huge scaffold of safety nets - and every point of weakness she exposes (e.g., fear of putting her head under water) is counterpointed by how bright and capable she is. Learning to drive in the city might have been a big deal to her, but getting into a car, honking at a truck and being told by... more the instructor what a great driver she is, really doesn't make for interesting reading.
review 2: I think a lot of people would be able to relate to this book. Quite often parents or circumstances deny us many things during our childhood, and when we are adults we want to have or experience those forbidden things. Not everyone takes the plunge to go for them, though--too many people accept their parents' word and give up their dreams. Once you are an adult, though, you can make your own decisions as to how you will live your life--especially if you are supporting yourself and have the education and/or intelligence to make informed decisions. It is most important to experience everything for yourself, and to make your own decisions as to what is worthwhile. less

Pretty good! A glimpse into growing up Indian in 80's Canada. Funny and oddly inspirational.

It had some funny moments, but overall, I found it a bit shallow.
