review 1: I'm honestly surprised how much I enjoyed this book. Adelnour's writing style is relaxed and fluid. Her honest reflections make this so much more than a generic travel memoir. Her constant questioning at the start of the book regarding the defintion of home was too repetitive but thankfully eased as the book progressed. I thought her details about Lebanese food and the city of Beirut were the strength of this book, and I learned a lot about Middle East politics in the process.
review 2: Very interesting, written by a woman who was born in Beirut. Her parents decided to move her family to Houston, TX during the civil war that occurred in Beirut from 1975 to 1990. They kept their apartment, though, and came back to visit when ever they felt that it was safe. The
... moreneighborhood is in the same area as the American University. The author, Salma Abdelnour, decided to return to Beirut to live there for a year. This book is about her year there (I believe it was mid-2010 to mid- 2011. I do know that she was there during the protests in Egypt, because she was actually in Tariq Square during the first protests, covering it as a reporter.I especially enjoyed seeing Beirut, Lebanon thru this author's eyes. Plus, she has some awesome recipes for Lebanese food in the back of her book.I made about half of her recipes and plan on trying the rest of them over the next few months. I especially liked her recipe for shish tawook. less
