review 1: I liked the book. Mr. Brower isn't really an author, like his friend, Jon Krakauer, but he did a good job putting the story together and keeping me interested, even though I knew the outcome. The behind the scenes description of the actual man hunt and capture of Warren Jeffs, had me cheering for the good guys. (Not Mr. Jeffs). it is a shame they couldn't nail him earlier and saved more children from his sick obsessions. it wasn't an objective book, but I didn't expect that. If anyone wants more detail in the whole FDLS scene which has recently played out, this is the book to read.
review 2: A powerful look into Warren Jeff's and the sick, twisted, manipulative, evil world he controlled. After reading this book, I am even more disgusted by the FLDS then I
... more ever was, and that is saying something. Warren Jeffs and his followers are more disturbed than I ever imagined. I also did not realize the extent of the man's control over an entire town, from the police right down to the building inspector. Everyone answered to him. "Wives" could be reassigned and members excommunicated with little to no knowledge of the outside world, left to fend for themselves. The fear of being kicked out, or having your family taken from you. Children of both genders raped and abused, girls as young as twelve married to men decades older that they had never even met. And maybe the scariest part of all, is that most were so brainwashed from this, starting from birth, that it would never occur to them to even try to do anything about it, much less have the strength. The fact that this despotic dictatorship existed for decades in America, not only under everyone's noses, even ignored, is what perhaps is the most worrisome. They even managed to manipulate government funding, in one case from the school system, to fund Warren Jeffs' despicable lifestyle. Disturbing is too tame of a word. less
